THE CONTEMPORARY CIRCUS

(Luza is in a hole in the middle of a lawn ringed with trees. She pops her head out and looks around. She calls to the people hidden behind the trees, who come to help her out of the hole.)

Narrator: Here in Canada, we’re experts at creating contemporary circus shows. We have many circus companies and artists, particularly in Québec. They invent highly successful shows and perform all around the world!

This is the Cité des arts du cirque in Montréal. It houses a circus school and performance spaces. Circus performers come here to train and rehearse, like the artists you see here. They are from two contemporary circus companies: Barcode and Acting for Climate.

(Luza moves and sees two men carrying a woman on their arms. They throw her up into the air. Luza does a cartwheel, then crawls under a woman executing the bridge, who is supporting another woman doing a handstand.)

Narrator: Learn about some of the Canadian troupes in the photo to earn more stars.

(Luza is joined by all the artists. Five lift her by the legs. She waves hello to an artist in the trees. She climbs down and everyone runs to the right. She sees four women. All four are carrying a man on their shoulders. Luza is so impressed that she forgets to look where she’s going and falls back in the hole.)

Narrator: Hey Luza, these artists are fun to look at, but be careful to watch your step!

Show: Unikkaaqtuat

Credits: Artcirq, The Seven Fingers, Taqqut Productions and Francisco Cruz

Description: A collaboration between Les 7 Doigts, a circus troupe founded in Montréal in 2002 and Artcirq, an Inuit arts collective founded in 1999 in Igloolik, Nunavut.

The logos of the two organizations appear, followed by an animated Inuit hunter walking in the dark with a flame at the tip of his finger. The animated flame turns into a real flame.

We then see acrobats performing on the aerial silks and playing Inuit games, such as the high kick and the blanket toss.

Artists play traditional instruments like the drum. They are all dressed in traditional and modern clothing and move in time with a gentle Inuit song sung by a woman.

Projected illustrations appear occasionally in the background. A polar bear walks across the stage. The video ends with the credits.

Show: Afrique en Cirque

Credits: Kalabanté Productions

Description: Circus troupe founded in Montréal in 2007 by an artist originally from Guinea.

On a stage, a man plays percussion, then two women dance and perform contortions in time with the group playing live music.

Six men perform floor acrobatics and create human pyramids in front of a jungle backdrop.

Men and women perform acrobatics to more upbeat music in front of an image that suggests city scenes. The artists then dance in front of a projected image that suggests a fire.

Musicians play djembe. The artists return in colourful costumes and perform acrobatics before the final bow.

Show: Timber!

Credits: Cirque Alfonse

Description: Circus troupe founded by several members of a single family and their friends in Saint-Alphonse-Rodriguez, Québec, in 2005.

The video starts with the words “Cirque Alfonse présente son nouveau spectacle Timber!” [“Cirque Alfonse presents its new show, Timber!”].

Men and women are seen on a stage with a set that looks like an old lumber camp. They are wearing traditional clothes. An old bearded man in a rocking chair smokes a pipe.

Then, artists perform acrobatics with lumberjack tools, like a two-man saw bent like a hoop for an acrobat to jump through. Acrobatics are performed with a large wooden wheel and artists juggle axes. The artists also play music, sing and dance. They finish around a table, then take their bows.

The video ends with the credits.

Transit show

Credits: Flip Fabrique et Take Cover Film

Description: Québec-based circus company founded in 2011.

The Flip Fabrique logo appears in the middle of the image as a trapeze artist crosses the screen.

On a stage in front of a backdrop of road cases, circus artists perform Saltos, tricks with hoops and trampoline jumps and aerial acrobatics to the rhythm of very energetic electronic music.

Some moves are shown in slow motion. At the end of the video, the Flip Fabrique logo reappears.

Show: Bolt Out of the Blue

Credits: Wonderbolt Productions and Fire Crown Productions

Description: Circus and theatre company founded in 1981 in Newfoundland and Labrador.

On a stage, we see a man who looks lost. Behind him, an orchestra is playing music. Blue light floods the stage and the Wonderbolt Circus Bolt out of the Blue logo appears on the screen and moved around. The atmosphere is very festive.

We then see a man juggling a hug cube above his head, then a woman in a bright green costume who is hula hooping. She is followed by a woman performing on an aerial hoop in front of bright blue curtains.

A man and a woman are performing acrobatic figures together, and some people dance in a circle. Last, a woman performs on aerial silks and a man in black tie holds a booklet that has a flame shooting out of it.

The screen is split in two. On the left appears the name of the show, Bolt Out of the Blue, the date and time of the show and the hashtag #WonderboltWednesday. On the right, there is a photo of a woman balancing on one foot on a man’s head. The photo looks like it is from a roll of film.

Show: Ripopée

Credits: L’Aubergine

Description: Clowning theatre company from the city of Québec founded in 1974 and specialized in shows for young people.

The words “L’Aubergine présente” [“L’Aubergine Presents”] and “Ripopée” appear on a patchwork background.

On a stage, we see four clowns – three women and one man – dressed in old clothes. They perform in front of a wooden set that they move around during the show. The clowns make funny faces that express surprise, joy and questioning. They play music, dance and joke around...

They go on to play with small rings that they move like waves for a paper boat to “sail” on. Then they perform a “concert” with marionettes and then with real instruments.

The video ends with the credits.

Show: Cirkopolis

Credits: Cirque Éloize

Description: Circus company founded in Montréal in 1993.

A man is sitting with his back to a desk covered in piles of paper. He is facing an image of skyscrapers held aloft in the clouds by a complex mechanical system.

Artists mostly wearing grey costumes perform acrobatics in decors inspired by factories. Some juggle, while others perform with a wheel or do acrobatics.

The video ends with the logo and show name.

Show: Life-Cycle

Credits: Coproduction DynamO Theatre and Guillaume Doin

Description: Circus and theatre company from Montréal founded in 1981 and specialized in shows for young people.

The video starts with the DynamO Théâtre logo and show name, Life-Cycle.

A man in a big coat is alone on the stage next to a desk. An umbrella and a bicycle are moving on their own, like marionettes. The man performs acrobatics with the bicycle, including standing upright on it.

These scenes of acrobatics are interspersed with magical scenes, like portraits moving on their own and leaves blowing out of a drawer.

The video ends with the credits.

Show: Machine de Cirque

Credits: Machine de Cirque

Description: Québec-based circus company founded in 2013.

Machine de Cirque logo appears on the screen, then we find ourselves in a performance hall.

We see excerpts from the same show of several men and one woman performing acrobatics.

One after the other over rhythmic music, they are shown balancing on unicycles, juggling, on the trapeze and so on. The artists are very energetic and sweaty, but they are also smiling a lot.

The mood is light and humorous. At the end, a man unplugs a cable and the lights go dark. The credits roll.

Show: O

Credits: Cirque du Soleil

Description: Québec company headquartered in Montréal, founded in Baie-Saint-Paul, Québec, in 1984.

A woman is shown in slow motion being launched into the air above a stage. The shadows of a half-bird, half-man creature and of an elephant appear.

Then aerial acrobats perform over the water-covered stage. A man creates a circle of fire around him.

Many artists, all dressed in elaborate costumes, perform acrobatics in the air, in the water, and on the ground. Several acrobats are on a boat-like metal structure swinging high above the stage.

The video ends with an animation of a gold letter O coming out of the water with an acrobat in the middle.
